Ingeniously staged and you will smartly dialogued, it’ll have no great difficulty in the way of living off their very ugly term.” [ 8 ]

The latest film’s author and you can movie director, Robert Rossen, sets up a multidimensional chess video game, having mortal bet, anywhere between Johnny, their boss (Thomas Gomez), their boss’s wife (Ellen Drew), a good cagey police inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you can a good scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whose sister (Nina Foch) did in the gambling establishment and you will dated a beneficial corrupt detective (Jim Bannon). The caustically epigrammatic program, new cast’s suavely managed body language out-of like and you will danger, and you will Rossen’s thrillingly restrained and you can fashionably cocky pictures (and his governmental conscience) get this pugnacious but really detail by detail spectacle a low profile classic of the category.” [ ten ]

Even though the spot observe a common development, the newest characterizations was fresh and also the activities good enough to help you overbalance. Dialogue is actually terse and relevant, preventing the sentimental, phoney reach. Strange digital camera bases show up occasionally to help you intensify appeal and you will momentarily arrest the eye. Solid teamplay by the Robert Rossen, doubling while the manager-scripter, and Milton Holmes, brand-new writer and member producer, as well as aids in rendering it a flaccid design.” [ 11 ]

Its primarily a matter of viewing Mr. Powell undergo their paces fashionably when you’re a large shed out-of actors and you can performers give him classic support. Evelyn Keyes plays the great nothing lady just who brings forth the best in your and you will Ellen Received is the easy and you may slinky vixen whom becomes your on the jams. Thomas Gomez are fatty due to the fact villain and you will Lee J. Cobb really does a different sort of ready concert tour since the a tired police inspector whom in the long run closes the case. A great deal of ingesting and you can puffing is completed of the all the worried.” [ 12 ]
